Passing the Leadership Baton

Tsitsi Mutendi

We often speak of passing the baton in leadership, but Tsitsi Mutendi takes this analogy to a new level, giving us insight into some of the problems in both association leadership as well as family-owned businesses. Tsitsi is the founder of the African Family Firms Association and helps companies like this realise and cope with their unique problems. How does the dynamic, energetic, and visionary founder of a family business hand over their ‘baby’ to the next generation? How do they trust their children, whom they have raised from infants, to now have the experience, insight, training, and skills to take over this company? And what if they don’t have enough vision? Or too much and go in a different direction to what the founder imagined?

That plays out in the same way in associations, especially the smaller, voluntary associations run by volunteers. How does the founder or entrenched leader hand over to the newer members that they welcomed in and helped to get established?

However, if we do not pass that baton properly, we will flounder and we risk losing the race entirely.

I love talking with Tsitsi and seeing some of her insight and experience and I invite you to listen to this conversation and be encouraged in your association leadership journey.
